What you’ll do:
Based in Regional Queensland, the Vegetation Management Field Assistant plays a key role in supporting vegetation and weed control across Santos’ regional operations.

This position involves operating and conducting activities on organic properties, performing vegetation maintenance, managing equipment, supervising contractors, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards to maintain site access and operational efficiency.

The role is offered on a full-time basis, operating on a 2/2 roster at various field locations.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning and Program Delivery
  • Plan and execute vegetation management activities including chemical application and equipment operation across leases, pipelines, and facility sites ahead of operational needs.
  • Maintain vegetation management machinery and support upkeep of infrastructure such as irrigation systems, access roads, and fire breaks to ensure safe and efficient operations.
Regulatory and Compliance Management
  • Coordinate with internal teams to ensure vegetation work meets regulatory obligations, landholder conditions, project approvals, and EHS standards.
  • Maintain thorough site records and documentation for audit readiness, including treatment logs, contractor checks, and environmental reports.
Contractor Engagement 
  • Assist with contractor compliance inspections, including site safety checks, work scope adherence, and performance monitoring.
  • Conduct pre-start briefings, site inductions, and safety checks to ensure contractors understand scope, environmental sensitivities, and compliance requirements.
Operational Integration and Risk Mitigation
  • Coordinate vegetation activities with field teams to align with operational schedules, drilling campaigns, and infrastructure projects.
  • Identify and mitigate vegetation-related risks such as fire hazards, erosion, access issues, and biosecurity threats.
Stakeholder Engagement and Reporting
  • Liaise with Land Access, HSE, Development, and Operations teams to ensure vegetation programs align with business priorities.
  • Provide regular reports on program progress, budget, compliance, and risks to operational leadership.

What you’ll bring:
Essential:  
  • Expert in planning, scheduling, and managing vegetation and weed control activities.  
  • Deep knowledge of Queensland environmental regulations, biosecurity obligations, and landholder access requirements.  
  • Skilled in preparing scopes of work, supervising contractors, and delivering detailed program reports.  
  • Proficient in interpreting and applying vegetation management standards, land condition reporting, and environmental management plans.  
  • Experienced in GIS tools, mapping systems, and field inspection reporting platforms.  
  • Strong understanding of hazard identification, risk management, and WHS compliance in field settings.  
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and negotiation skills to work effectively with teams, contractors, regulators, and landholders.

Desirable:  
  • Field experience in vegetation and weed management within sectors like oil & gas, mining, agriculture, or infrastructure and safety monitoring.
  • Knowledge of environmental approvals, biosecurity plans, risk management, and compliance reporting in remote operations.  
  • Proven ability to implement cost-saving vegetation strategies and conduct field inspections and audits.  
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in environmental science, agriculture and project management, chemical handing and biosecurity certification preferred.  
  • Current driver’s license.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
